A beautiful afternoon on the river.....

Cody decided he wanted to go on a boating trip. I told him that if he helped me get some stuff done Saturday morning that we could go in the afternoon. We were up bright and early. I sprayed weeds and Cody pulled weeds out in the yard. After lunch we loaded up the boat and headed out. Shane (Cody's friend from down the street) and Queenie rounded our adventurous group.

We headed to a little island about 2 miles upriver.

The boys made a campfire and we cooked hot dogs.

The boys swam, tossed a football and just goofed around. We headed home about 7:00 p.m.
It was an awesome afternoon on the river!

Cody's birthday....Fathers Day

We had a great weekend! Saturday was Cody's birthday. Hard to believe he is 11!

He invited three of his friends over to the house for pizza and ice cream.
Below: Lance and Shane chow down on pizza.

Lorelei makes sure everyone gets a healthy portion of ice cream!

I then loaded them all in the car and took them to the Dallas pool (about a 1/2 hour away). The boys had a blast. They swam for about 2 hours.

Adam came home from work/school on Saturday afternoon to be here for fathers day. On Sunday we went to church, came home and barbecued, played cards, played some frisbee and had a nice day. We all ate way too much. There was steak, shrimp, hamburgers, ribs and Lorelei and Adam made some awesome brownies!

Below: Cody and I beating Jon and Adam at a game of hearts.

Below: Me with way too much to eat.

For fathers day I got an orchard ladder! Whooohooo....I really needed one. In the past during harvest of the apples and pears I either stand way up on top of my stepladder (not a safe thing to do) or I borrow a neighbors ladder. Now I have my own! Thank you family.

In other news around the place we are eating lots of fresh strawberries from the garden. I mean bowls full of strawberries!

Lorelei has frozen some and made lots of jam. The strawberries will start winding down, some blueberries are starting to ripen and we are also getting some raspberries.

About a month ago the chickens had stopped laying so they were given away. I mentioned to my neighbor that we no longer had chickens. He had a hen that had just hatched out 8 chicks so a deal was made for the hen and the chicks. They follow the mother hen around and hide under her to keep out of danger and to stay warm. When they are old enough we will return the hen to our neighbor.

June is a terrible month for allergies. Everyone but Jon suffers. The farmers will begin cutting the grass and the wheat this week and by the 4th of July we are generally over the worst of it.

The Pennington Wildlife Refuge

Just outside our kitchen and bedroom windows sits some wildlife feeders and some water. Yesterday morning I woke up and decided to document what came by for a visit.

Before I even made it outside there was some discontent at the bird feeder. Yes little chipmunk this is a bird feeder and you are not a bird! The picture is not very good as it was taken through the window. Right after I took the picture....there was a scuffle and the top of the bird feeder came flying off!

The quail are probably our favorite birds. There are two pair that are nesting nearby. They have begun to stop by the feeder 3 or 4 times a day. They call loudly to one another (Lorelei especially enjoys that first thing in the morning....NOT)

The Stellar Jays are pretty, but boy are they obnoxious! They can eat 8 or 10 pcs of dog food and then fly up to the feeder and start eating there also. They bully the other birds (except the cowbirds) and make a lot of racket. They have quite a vocabulary of sounds.

The Spotted Towhee is a regular. They are one of the few birds that have red eyes.

Below are one of my favorites. This is a male and female Black Headed Grosbeak. There are at least three pairs nesting nearby and there is almost always at least one at the feeder.

Below is one of the many chipmunks eating out of the correct feeder!

I was playing around trying to get one of these guys in mid air. I changed some camera settings around to get a faster shutter speed and got the shot below.
Geronimo!!

We have a couple of local squirrels also that have been raiding the chicken food in the chicken coop and eating the strawberries. It was nice to see this guy show up. Hopefully he ate his fill and will leave the other stuff alone.

Last but not least the scruffy looking guy below showed up to gnaw on my fruit trees. It looks like a yearling that has been kicked out because his mom probably has a new baby.

Well all of the above happened within an hour. This is just a sample of what happens by every day. We also have a pair of house wrens nesting outside the window. We also see white capped chickadees, cowbirds, swallows and sparrows. We had a beautiful Evening Grosbeak stop by once but we haven't seen him since.

Last day of school, Adam and I go fishing!

Well today is the last day of school for Jon and Cody. Adam has been out for a few weeks now. Next year Cody starts the 6th grade and the first year of middle school! Jon will begin his senior year of high school and will be the senior class president. Adam will begin (if he saves enough money) his second year of college. Wow how time flies.

On Sunday Adam and I packed up the boat and headed for the mountains. We fished at Detroit lake and had a great time.

And yes we brought home dinner!

Adam put some fish on the barbecue and Lorelei fried some. Adam came inside and decided to put some fresh pineapple in the pan with the ones Lorelei was preparing. The fried ones were the best. After dinner we had desert with fresh strawberries from the garden.
